Why teak for an ottoman

The one footstool you can leave on the patio and forget about.

An ottoman lives a hard life — feet up, children on it, used as a seat, a side table and storage, often moved between a living room and a terrace. Outdoors it takes everything the weather delivers. Most woods fail that test within a few seasons. Teak (Tectona grandis) is the exception, and it is why teak has been the default for exposed seating for generations. It carries a high level of natural oils and silica inside the grain, which repel water, resist rot and fungal decay and deter insects — the same chemistry that keeps teak on ship decks and verandahs with no coating at all. That makes a solid-teak ottoman uniquely suited to patios, poolsides and resort terraces where acacia or mango would swell, split or grey badly. Teak is also dimensionally stable, so joints stay tight through humidity swings, and its warm golden-brown grain reads as genuinely premium under a cushion or as a bare footstool. It is a premium timber — and when the piece has to work outdoors or carry a high-end look, it is the one that earns the premium.

What we build

Solid teak frame, finished the way your range needs.

Every teak ottoman starts from a kiln-dried solid-teak frame — legs, rails and corner blocks sized for the loading an ottoman really sees. From that backbone we build the three configurations buyers ask for most, in our own catalogue designs or to your exact drawings under OEM.

Solid-teak footstool

All-wood, slatted or solid-top footstool for indoor or fully exposed outdoor use — teak-oiled to hold a golden tone, or left to silver naturally. The low-maintenance choice for gardens, patios and resort grounds.

Upholstered-top ottoman

A foam-and-fabric cushion top in your textile over the teak frame — indoor accent and footrest, or quick-dry foam and outdoor fabric for covered terraces. Foam density specified for domestic or contract use.

Storage ottoman

A lift-off teak lid or hinged top over a solid-wood box — a footstool that stows throws, cushions or games, built to the depth and clear internal volume your buyers want.

Care & durability

Finished to your brief, built to take years of use.

Teak frames are kiln-dried to stable moisture levels before joinery, so they hold firm under the repeated loading a footstool demands — feet, seating and storage weight alike — and teak's natural oils mean no sealing is required even in fully exposed positions. For indoor ottomans, wipe the wood with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid soaking and harsh solvents; condition any leather or upholstered top with a neutral product. Outdoor ottomans can be left to weather to a silver-grey patina with nothing more than an occasional wash, or re-oiled once or twice a year to keep the warm golden tone — the choice is purely cosmetic, since teak's durability does not depend on a finish. Printed care and material cards ship with every order so your retail and hospitality customers get the same guidance you do.

Teak ottoman sourcing FAQs

Can a teak ottoman be used outdoors?

Yes — teak is the reason to choose it. The naturally high oil and silica content inside Tectona grandis grain repels water and resists rot, fungal decay and insects, so a solid-teak ottoman or footstool survives sun, rain, humidity and salt air on a patio, poolside or resort terrace without a protective coating. For outdoor use we build it in solid teak throughout or with a quick-dry foam and outdoor fabric top; for indoors you can specify an upholstered cushion in your textile.

What is a teak ottoman made of?

A teak ottoman is built on a kiln-dried solid teak frame — legs, rails and, where specified, a solid teak lid or slatted top. From there it can stay all-wood as a footstool, carry a foam-and-fabric cushion top in your fabric, or open as a lift-off storage ottoman. We do not use plywood or particle-board carcasses; the structure is solid wood throughout.

Why is a teak ottoman more expensive than mango or acacia?

Teak is a premium tropical hardwood and the price reflects genuine performance: natural oils and silica give it weather resistance and dimensional stability that mango, acacia and sheesham cannot match in exposed conditions, plus a warm golden grain that reads as high-end on a retail floor or in a hotel room. We advise teak where outdoor durability or prestige justify the spend, and a value wood where they do not.

Do you ship teak ottomans flat-pack to save freight?

Yes. Many teak ottoman styles ship knockdown or flat-pack — legs and frame packed separately from the top or cushion — which cuts freight cost and breakage for importers and online sellers. Assembled pieces are also available, and everything is packed to ISPM-15 heat-treated export standards.

Can you make teak ottomans to our own design or private label?

Yes. We are both ODM, with our own ready catalogue, and OEM — we build to your drawings, dimensions, fabrics, foam density and finish, with custom CNC-carved detail and private-label, retail-ready or Amazon-FBA-ready packaging. Send a reference or tech pack and we prototype before production.

Are your teak ottomans compliant for import into the US and EU?

Yes. Teak is a tropical timber, so we document FSC chain-of-custody and Vriksh timber-legality, are EUDR-ready with geolocation and deforestation-free due diligence, and support US Lacey Act declarations, UK Timber Regulation and CARB / TSCA formaldehyde-compliant finishes, with SEDEX / SMETA, ISO and SGS assurance.
