What bone inlay is

A decorative skin, not a structural wood.

Bone inlay is an artisan surface technique with a Mughal lineage, kept alive today in Rajasthan's Jaipur craft cluster. It is not a timber or a species — it is a method. Understanding that is the difference between buying a showpiece that photographs beautifully and sells, and mis-selling a piece as something it is not.

Hand-cut bone

Each motif is built from small pieces of bone, filed and shaped by hand — no two chests are mechanically identical. The bone is a by-product of domestic livestock, not ivory and not a protected species.

Resin bed & painted ground

The pieces are set into a bed of resin laid over the frame, then the background is hand-painted — classic indigo, black, grey, teal, pink or a custom colour — leaving the bone raised and high-contrast.

Solid-wood or composite carcass

The load-bearing body beneath the inlay is a wooden frame. That timber is where our FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh legality and EUDR-ready paperwork apply.

How it compares

Bone inlay versus the alternatives.

Inlay crafts are often confused with one another. Here is how bone inlay sits against the materials buyers weigh it against — so you specify the right look for your margin and market.

Sourcing & compliance

An ethical craft, documented for import.

The two questions serious buyers ask about bone inlay are what the bone is and how the piece survives the ocean. Our answers are on paper. The bone is an agricultural by-product of domestic livestock — not ivory, not wildlife, and not a CITES-listed species. The wooden frame beneath carries FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh timber-legality and EUDR-ready due diligence, and the craft workforce is SEDEX / SMETA audited.

Questions buyers ask

Bone inlay, answered.

What is bone inlay furniture made of?

Bone inlay is a surface craft, not a structural wood. Thousands of small pieces of bone are hand-cut, set by hand into a bed of resin over a solid-wood or composite frame, and the background is then hand-painted around them. The result is a high-contrast pattern — florals, lattice, geometric or Moroccan motifs — raised slightly proud of a coloured ground. Only the inlay surface is bone; the carcass underneath carries the load.

Is the bone ethically sourced, and is it CITES-restricted?

The bone we use is an agricultural by-product of domestic livestock — it is not ivory, not wildlife, and not a CITES-listed species, so it does not fall under endangered-species trade controls. Where a piece has a solid-wood frame, that timber carries our FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh legality and EUDR-ready due diligence. We provide the supporting documentation directly to serious buyers.

Can you produce custom bone inlay patterns and colours?

Yes. As an ODM and OEM manufacturer we make our own catalogue designs and build to your drawings, reference images, Pantone colour and private-label requirements. Pattern density, motif, ground colour and piece dimensions are all specified at sampling, and we prototype before any production run.

How do you pack and ship bone inlay furniture so it arrives intact?

Bone inlay is a delicate surface, so pieces are corner-protected, foam-wrapped and crated for container transit, with ISPM-15 heat-treated export packing. We ship FOB or CIF from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, and offer Amazon-FBA-ready and retail-ready packaging for online and store channels.

What is the minimum order for bone inlay pieces?

A trial or sample order can ship LCL (part-container) so you can approve the craft first. For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and bone inlay consolidates well with other décor and furniture into a single mixed container.

How should bone inlay furniture be cared for in use?

Dust with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills quickly; avoid soaking, harsh chemicals and prolonged direct sun or heat, which can stress the resin bed. It is an accent and indoor-décor material rather than a heavy-duty outdoor surface. We supply care guidance with every shipment for your retail or hospitality customers.
