Mother of pearl furniture — hand-set nacre inlay, built for export.
Iridescent shell, set by hand into solid-wood and resin carcasses — the high-margin décor material that fills containers. We make it to our catalogue or to your drawings, with the carcass wood fully compliant for US and EU import.
Nacre — the shell's inner shine, cut and set by hand.
Mother of pearl is nacre, the iridescent layer that lines the inside of oyster and other mollusc shells. Craftspeople cut it into thin tiles and shaped pieces, set each one into a carved recess on a carcass, then fill, level, seal and polish until the shell sits flush with the surface. The shell delivers the pattern and the play of light; the wood or resin beneath delivers the structure. That is why every piece we export is a decorative inlay on a sound carcass — not a solid block of shell.
The specification, at a glance.
Nacre is a natural composite of aragonite platelets bound in protein — the structure that makes it both lustrous and surprisingly tough for a shell. Here is how it behaves as a furniture surface, and what that means for the pieces you sell.
| Property | Mother of pearl (nacre) | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Inner shell layer of oysters / molluscs | Natural material; each tile varies in tone |
| Hardness | ~3.5 on the Mohs scale | Scratch-resistant for a décor surface |
| Appearance | Iridescent white / silver with colour play | High visual value, high retail margin |
| Grain / pattern | Set by hand into geometric or floral motifs | Fully customisable inlay design |
| Durability | Hard but brittle; depends on carcass + topcoat | Best for tabletops, fronts, mirrors, accents |
| Carcass | Solid wood (sheesham / mango) or resin | Structure and compliance come from the carcass |
| Finish | Sealed; lacquer or PU topcoat, CARB / TSCA compliant | Wipe-clean, stable, low-emission |
| Care | Soft cloth; no abrasives, bleach or solvents | Simple to maintain in retail and residential use |
| Sustainability | Shell by-product; FSC / reclaimed wood carcass | Deforestation-free story on the timber |

Shell, bone or resin — specify with confidence.
Buyers often weigh mother of pearl against bone inlay, capiz shell and printed resin. Each has a place; the table helps you match material to price point, look and use.
Pair any of these with our solid-wood expertise, and you get a decorative surface on a carcass that carries real export compliance — the difference between a piece that photographs well and one that also clears customs and survives the shelf.
| Material | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mother of pearl | Iridescent, colour-shifting | Luxe accent pieces, décor |
| Bone inlay | Matte white, graphic motifs | Patterned statement furniture |
| Capiz shell | Translucent, pale | Lighting, lightweight décor |
| Printed resin | Uniform, pearl-effect | Entry price points, volume |
The shell is the surface. The carcass carries the paperwork.
Mother of pearl itself is a shell by-product, so the import questions fall on the wood underneath — and that is exactly where most décor exporters are thin. Our carcasses run through the same timber programme as our solid-wood furniture: FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh timber-legality, CITES-compliant sheesham handling and EUDR-ready geolocation due diligence, with US Lacey Act support and CARB / TSCA-compliant finishes. Pieces are packed to ISPM-15 and audited to ISO, SGS and SEDEX / SMETA standards.
| Requirement | Our standard |
|---|---|
| Carcass legality | Vriksh verified · CITES-compliant sheesham |
| Sustainability | FSC chain-of-custody · reclaimed-wood options |
| EU market | EUDR-ready · geolocation · UKTR |
| US market | Lacey Act support · CARB / TSCA finishes |
| Social audit | SEDEX / SMETA · ISO · SGS inspection |
| Export packing | ISPM-15 heat-treated · protective crating |

Frequently asked questions
What is mother of pearl furniture made from?
Mother of pearl is nacre — the iridescent inner shell layer of oysters and other molluscs. For furniture it is cut into thin tiles or shaped pieces and hand-set into a carved recess on a solid-wood or resin carcass, then levelled, sealed and polished. The shell gives the surface pattern; the wood or resin underneath gives the furniture its strength, which is why these are decorative inlay pieces rather than solid-shell objects.
Is mother of pearl durable enough for commercial use?
Yes, when it is set and finished correctly. Nacre is hard (roughly 3.5 on the Mohs scale) and scratch-resistant, and once it is embedded flush and sealed with a lacquer or PU topcoat it handles normal retail, residential and light-hospitality use. It is a brittle, decorative surface, so we recommend it for tabletops, cabinet fronts, mirrors and accent pieces rather than high-abrasion floors or heavy work surfaces. We document the carcass wood and finish so your buyers know exactly what they are specifying.
Can you supply mother of pearl furniture to our own design and private label?
Yes. We are both ODM and OEM: choose from our ready inlay patterns or send drawings, finishes and brand requirements and we manufacture to spec, including custom CNC-cut recesses, bespoke motifs, private-label marking and retail-ready or Amazon-FBA packaging. Sampling and prototyping are available before you commit to a container.
Is the wood under the inlay compliant for the EU and US?
Yes. The inlay is a surface; the furniture underneath is a solid-wood carcass covered by our timber programme — FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh timber-legality, CITES-compliant handling of sheesham, EUDR-ready geolocation due diligence, and US Lacey Act declaration support with CARB / TSCA-compliant finishes. Certificate names are shared with serious buyers directly; numbers are provided on request.
What is your minimum order for mother of pearl pieces?
A trial or sample order can ship LCL so you can assess the inlay quality first. For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and we consolidate mother of pearl pieces with furniture, metalware and décor into a single mixed container.
How do you care for a mother of pearl surface?
Dust with a soft dry or barely damp cloth and wipe spills quickly. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach, ammonia and solvent cleaners, which dull the nacre and the topcoat. Keep pieces out of prolonged direct sun and away from direct heat to protect both the shell and the wood carcass. A sealed surface needs no wax; we supply care guidance with every order.
