Bone inlay trunks — hand-set pattern over a solid-wood box, built for export.

A storage trunk that earns a place at the foot of the bed or in a hotel lobby: thousands of hand-cut bone pieces laid into resin over a solid mango or sheesham carcase, in florals, lattice and geometric grounds your customers will recognise on sight.

What it is

A decorative surface, a structural box — two crafts in one piece.

A bone inlay trunk is not a veneer or a print. The box is built first in solid wood, then skilled artisans hand-cut each bone sliver, set it into a bed of resin to form the motif, and hand-paint the ground colour around it. The lid lifts on steel hinges; the pattern wraps the front, sides and top. It is a high-contrast, tactile piece that reads as hand-made across a room — the reason inlay sells at a premium in boho, luxe and eclectic ranges.

The build

Solid-wood heart, hand-laid skin.

Solid-wood carcase

Mango or sheesham box and lid — strong enough to hold weight and take the lid being opened daily. The frame carries our timber-legality paperwork; the inlay carries the look.

Hand-cut bone

Bone is a by-product of domestic livestock — not ivory, not wildlife, not a CITES-listed species. Each piece is cut, filed and set by hand. A fully animal-free resin-inlay alternative reads identically.

Painted ground & seal

The background is hand-painted around the inlay in your chosen colour, then the surface is sealed with a CARB / TSCA Title VI compliant finish for everyday durability.

Why source inlay from us

Craft you can sell, paperwork that clears customs.

Most inlay workshops sell craft alone. We pair genuine Rajasthani hand-inlay with the compliance file serious importers need: FSC chain-of-custody and Vriksh timber-legality on the solid-wood carcase, EUDR-ready geolocation due diligence, US Lacey Act declaration support and UK Timber Regulation cover. Bone is documented as an animal by-product with CITES-compliant handling; a resin alternative removes animal-origin paperwork entirely.

Common questions

Bone inlay trunks — what buyers ask.

What is a bone inlay trunk made of?

The box itself is solid wood — usually mango or sheesham — with a hinged lid, so it carries weight and takes daily handling. The decorative skin is built from thousands of hand-cut bone pieces (an agricultural by-product of domestic livestock, never ivory or wildlife) set one at a time into a resin bed, with the background hand-painted around them. Only the surface is inlay; the carcase underneath does the structural work. A fully animal-free resin-inlay version is available for buyers who prefer it.

What sizes do bone inlay trunks come in, and can you make custom dimensions?

Our standard range runs from small keepsake and jewellery boxes through blanket-box and coffee-table trunks to graduated nesting sets of two or three. As an OEM manufacturer we build to your drawings — custom length, height, lid style, lining, hinge and handle hardware are all set at sampling, and we prototype before any production run.

Are the inlay patterns and background colours customisable?

Yes. Because every piece is laid by hand, pattern and ground colour are fully open to your brief. Popular patterns are floral vine, Moroccan lattice, scallop, star-burst and herringbone; popular grounds are charcoal black, ivory, slate grey, indigo, blush and teal. We work ODM from our catalogue or OEM to your artwork, Pantone references and private-label packaging.

How durable is a bone inlay trunk, and how should it be cared for?

Each inlay piece is bonded in resin and the surface is sealed, so the pattern resists daily handling and light moisture. Care is simple: dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly, and keep the trunk out of standing water, prolonged direct sun and radiators. Minor variation in line and tone is inherent to a hand-craft and is a mark of authenticity, not a defect.

What is your minimum order for bone inlay trunks?

A trial or sample order can ship LCL (part-container) so you can approve the build first. For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and we consolidate inlay trunks with inlay chests, nightstands, mirrors and other décor into a single mixed container.

Do your bone inlay trunks meet US and EU import rules, and how are they packed?

Yes. The solid-wood carcase ships with FSC chain-of-custody on request, Vriksh timber-legality and EUDR-ready due diligence, plus US Lacey Act declaration support, UK Timber Regulation and CARB / TSCA Title VI compliant finishes. Bone is documented as an animal by-product with CITES-compliant handling where relevant. Each trunk is corner-protected, foam-wrapped and crated in ISPM-15 heat-treated export packing from Mundra or Nhava Sheva.
