Why rubberwood for a bookshelf

An even, paintable hardwood with a real eco story and a keen price.

Rubberwood earns its place on two commercial fronts: price and paintability. It is the timber of the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) — a genuine close-grained hardwood (Janka around 960–1,100 lbf, in the range of mango) harvested only after the tree finishes its latex-producing life, typically at 25–30 years. That makes it a true plantation by-product, not a forest wood, so it is both economical and a credible eco credential for value ranges. Its pale cream-to-blonde colour and straight, even, almost figureless grain are its quiet superpower: paint, stain and lacquer go on evenly with no wild figure fighting the colour, so rubberwood is the ideal base for painted white, grey and pastel collections, and for stains that convincingly mimic pricier woods. It needs proper processing — kiln-drying and treatment against staining and borer — which we do as standard. For Scandinavian, coastal, kids' and home-office shelving at a sharp price, rubberwood is hard to beat.

Care & durability

Properly processed to stay stable and stain-free indoors.

Rubberwood's durability depends on processing, and we do not cut corners: every board is kiln-dried to a low, stable moisture level and treated against fungal staining and borer before it becomes a bookcase, giving a stable, long-lasting indoor piece. Keep rubberwood bookshelves indoors in dry, climate-controlled rooms — it is not a wood for damp or outdoor settings — and out of prolonged direct sun. Dust with a soft dry or barely damp cloth and avoid soaking and harsh solvents, which can mark a painted finish. Painted and lacquered surfaces wipe clean; chips can be touched up easily because the base colour is even. For heavier loads we recommend adjustable shelves and a solid back to transfer weight into the frame. Full care and finish guidance ships with every order so your retail customers get consistent advice.

Questions buyers ask

Rubberwood bookshelf sourcing, answered.

What is rubberwood and is it a real hardwood?

Rubberwood is the timber of the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) — a genuine, close-grained hardwood with a Janka hardness around 960–1,100 lbf, in the range of mango or soft maple. It is harvested at the end of the tree's latex-producing life, so it is a true plantation by-product rather than a forest wood, which makes it both economical and a strong eco story for value ranges.

Is rubberwood strong enough for a bookshelf?

Yes, for normal to moderate loads. Rubberwood has good stiffness for its weight, so correctly built shelves carry books well. Because it is a touch softer than sheesham or acacia, we keep open spans shorter, run shelves at 25–30 mm, and add a solid back or centre upright for heavier loads — the same sensible engineering we use on any value hardwood.

Why is rubberwood good for painted and stained bookshelves?

Rubberwood has a pale cream-to-blonde colour and a straight, even, close grain with little figure, so it takes paint, stain and lacquer exceptionally evenly — no wild grain fighting the colour. That makes it the ideal base for painted white, grey and pastel ranges and for stains that mimic pricier woods, which is why it is a favourite for Scandinavian, coastal and kids' shelving.

How is rubberwood treated so it lasts?

Untreated rubberwood is prone to fungal staining and borer, so proper processing is essential — and we do it. Every board is kiln-dried to a low, stable moisture level and treated (typically borate) before manufacture, which prevents staining and insect attack and gives a stable, durable indoor bookshelf. It should be kept indoors in dry, climate-controlled conditions.

What is your minimum order for rubberwood bookshelves?

A trial or sample order can ship LCL (part-container). For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and rubberwood's lighter weight and flat-pack friendliness make it very efficient to consolidate with other categories in a mixed container.

Can you make rubberwood bookshelves to our own design and brand?

Yes. We work as ODM (our catalogue designs) and OEM — your drawings, dimensions, finishes and private-label or retail-ready packaging. Rubberwood suits painted and stained modular bookcases, kids' and home-office shelving, ladder shelves and flat-pack ranges, with custom CNC detailing where a design calls for it.
