Why rosewood for a sideboard

Hardwood density, heirloom grain, documented legality.

A sideboard works harder than almost any cabinet in the home — it stores linen, glassware and tableware, carries lamps and serving dishes on top, and is wiped and reopened every day. Rosewood is built for exactly that life. It is one of the hardest and densest furniture timbers of the Dalbergia genus, so the top resists the dents, scratches and ring-marks that quickly tire a softer wood, while natural oils in the heartwood add their own resistance to wear. That same density grips screws, hinges and drawer runners firmly, keeping a long multi-door cabinet square and smooth-running for years. What sets rosewood apart on a retail floor, though, is the look: a deep, dark, figured grain — golden brown through chocolate to near-purple, streaked with black — that photographs beautifully and carries a genuine premium. Because Dalbergia is a protected timber, that premium comes with paperwork, and every piece we ship is documented to prove it was sourced and traded legally.

Every dimension below is a standard starting point — we build rosewood sideboards to your exact width, depth, door count and internal layout for contract, retail and private-label programmes. Because rosewood is heavy, longer credenzas carry reinforced centre supports as standard.

Where rosewood sideboards sell

One premium cabinet, several channels.

Dining & living rooms

The classic use — a long, low cabinet for linen, glassware and display, with a dense top for lamps, trays and serving. Rosewood's dark figured grain makes it the hero piece buyers photograph for the catalogue.

Premium retail & private-label

Rosewood reads as heirloom-grade on the floor, supporting a higher price point. We manufacture to your drawings and finishes (OEM) alongside our own ready designs (ODM) for private-label and branded ranges.

Hospitality & contract

Reception, restaurant and hotel storage that takes daily handling. Rosewood's hardness, natural oils and sealed finishes stand up to commercial use; build to hospitality and contract furniture specs.

Import-ready compliance

A protected timber, documented to clear your market cleanly.

Because Dalbergia is listed on CITES Appendix II, a rosewood sideboard only crosses borders cleanly with the right legality trail — so we built the paperwork around it. Every piece ships with CITES-compliant handling, Vriksh timber-legality verification, FSC chain-of-custody on request, and EUDR-ready geolocation and deforestation-free due diligence. We provide US Lacey Act declaration support, UK Timber Regulation coverage, and CARB / TSCA Title VI formaldehyde-compliant finishes, with social and quality assurance under SEDEX / SMETA, ISO and SGS inspection, and ISPM-15 heat-treated export packing. Certificate references go directly to serious buyers — never published.

Care & durability

Finished to your brief, built to take years of service.

Rosewood's density and natural oils are its headline durability features: a kiln-dried, properly finished rosewood top resists the dents, ring-marks and scratches that soften the look of lesser woods on a hard-working sideboard, and the oils help the heartwood shrug off everyday wear. Day to day, wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth and dry any spills promptly — no furniture wood should be left wet. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads, and keep the cabinet out of prolonged direct sun, which can lighten rosewood's prized dark colour over time. A periodic wax or light re-oil feeds the surface and keeps the figured grain deep and lustrous. Dense fibre means hinges and runners stay firmly seated, so a long, heavy four-door credenza keeps opening smoothly and sitting square. Full care and finish guidance ships with every order, so your retail and hospitality customers get consistent advice. Questions buyers ask

Rosewood sideboard sourcing, answered.

Is rosewood good for a sideboard?

Yes. Rosewood is one of the hardest and densest furniture hardwoods — Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) rates around 2,400 lbf on the Janka scale and sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo) around 1,660 lbf, both well above oak and far above pine. That density lets a sideboard top absorb the knocks, ring-marks and daily wiping of living- and dining-room use, while the wood's natural oils help it resist wear. The deep, dark, figured grain also reads as premium on a retail floor, which is why rosewood sideboards command a higher price point.

What wood is a rosewood sideboard actually made from?

Rosewood is the trade name for timbers of the Dalbergia genus. For most Jodhpur-made rosewood sideboards the working timber is Dalbergia sissoo — known locally as sheesham and sold worldwide as Indian rosewood — with the denser, darker Dalbergia latifolia used for statement pieces. Both are solid hardwood throughout the carcass, doors and drawer fronts; we never position rosewood as a veneer or panel product.

Is rosewood CITES-controlled, and can you export a rosewood sideboard legally?

Yes. Dalbergia species are listed on CITES Appendix II, so rosewood must be sourced and shipped with proper legality paperwork. We handle Dalbergia sissoo (sheesham) on a CITES-compliant basis, backed by Vriksh timber-legality verification, FSC chain-of-custody and EUDR-ready geolocation and deforestation-free due diligence, with US Lacey Act declaration support and UK Timber Regulation coverage.

What sizes do your rosewood sideboards come in?

Standard sideboards run roughly 120-200 cm (47-79 in) wide, 40-45 cm (16-18 in) deep and 75-90 cm (30-36 in) high, in two-door, three-door, four-door, drawer-bank and open-shelf layouts. Because rosewood is heavy, we also engineer longer credenzas with reinforced centre supports. We build to your exact dimensions, door count and internal configuration for contract, retail and private-label programmes.

What is your minimum order for rosewood sideboards?

A trial or sample order can ship LCL (part-container). For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and we consolidate rosewood sideboards with dining tables, consoles, décor and other categories into a single mixed container. Typical lead time is 30-45 days, quoted FOB or CIF from Mundra or Nhava Sheva.

How do you finish and care for a rosewood sideboard?

Rosewood takes oil, wax, matte lacquer and hand-rubbed finishes beautifully, deepening its dark grain; we use CARB / TSCA Title VI formaldehyde-compliant products. In service, keep the cabinet out of prolonged direct sun to preserve colour, wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth, dry any spills promptly, and re-oil or wax periodically. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads. Full care and finish guidance ships with every order.
