Why reclaimed wood for an ottoman

Character that is earned, not manufactured — and the cleanest sustainability story we offer.

A reclaimed ottoman begins as timber that has already lived a life — recovered from old buildings, doors, beams, railway sleepers and furniture, much of it aged sheesham, teak and sal. That origin gives it two things no new wood can match. First, genuine character: decades of weathering, saw marks, old nail holes, bolt scars and naturally varied tones, so every piece reads as authentic rather than distressed-to-order. Second, the strongest sustainability credential in the solid-wood world — a reclaimed ottoman puts no new demand on standing forest and diverts usable timber from waste. There is a practical bonus, too: old-growth salvaged wood is typically denser and more stable than fast-grown new stock, having already done most of its moving and drying — an asset for a small, frequently handled piece that doubles as a footrest, a seat and an occasional table. We clean, de-nail, kiln-dry and re-mill each board, then rebuild it into a solid, splinter-free frame or top. The result suits rustic, industrial and farmhouse programs where story and texture sell.

Ottomans documented for your market before they leave the port.

Reclaimed timber still needs a clean paper trail, so we document the salvaged stream carefully. Every reclaimed wood ottoman ships with timber-legality documentation and FSC chain-of-custody where the salvaged stream qualifies, plus EUDR-ready geolocation and deforestation-free due diligence — and reclaimed material supports a particularly strong deforestation-free position. We provide US Lacey Act declaration support, UK Timber Regulation coverage, and CARB / TSCA formaldehyde-compliant finishes, with social and quality assurance under SEDEX / SMETA, ISO and SGS inspection, and ISPM-15 heat-treated export packing. Certificate references go directly to serious buyers — never published.

Care & durability

Finished to your brief, built for years of indoor service.

Reclaimed boards are metal-checked, de-nailed, kiln-dried and re-milled before joinery, so a finished ottoman is structurally sound and splinter-free despite its aged surface. Sealed reclaimed wood wipes clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth — avoid soaking, harsh solvents and prolonged standing water. The retained patina, old nail holes and tonal variation are intentional and will not affect strength. Upholstered tops should be vacuumed and spot-cleaned per the cover you specify; storage lids are fitted with soft-stop or simple hinges to your preference. Because the timber has already settled over decades, reclaimed ottomans tend to be very stable, though we still advise keeping them out of direct sun and away from heat sources, as with any solid wood. Any wrought-iron or hairpin base is powder-coated against scuffing. Reclaimed ottomans are intended for indoor and covered use. Full care and finish guidance ships with every order so your retail and hospitality customers get consistent advice.

Questions buyers ask

Reclaimed wood ottoman sourcing, answered.

What is a reclaimed wood ottoman made from?

Our reclaimed ottomans are built from genuine salvaged old wood — timber recovered from old buildings, doors, beams, railway sleepers and furniture, much of it aged sheesham, teak and sal. The wood is cleaned, de-nailed, kiln-dried and re-milled, then rebuilt into a solid ottoman frame or a plank top. Because it is old-growth timber, it is typically dense and stable, and every piece carries authentic weathering, saw marks, nail holes and varied tones.

Can a reclaimed wood ottoman have an upholstered or storage top?

Yes. We build three main formats: a solid reclaimed-wood top ottoman used as a footstool, low seat or coffee-table surface; an upholstered-top ottoman on a reclaimed-wood frame or base in leather, cotton, linen or jute; and a storage ottoman with a hinged or lift-off reclaimed-wood lid over an interior cavity. As an OEM manufacturer we also build to your exact drawing, fill and cover.

Is reclaimed wood a sustainable choice for ottomans?

It is the most sustainable solid-wood option we offer. A reclaimed ottoman puts no new demand on standing forest — it gives a second life to timber that already exists, diverting it from waste. That story resonates strongly with eco-conscious retail and hospitality buyers. We still supply timber-legality documentation, FSC where the salvaged stream qualifies, and EUDR-ready due diligence.

Will every reclaimed wood ottoman look the same?

No — and that is the point. Because each ottoman uses different salvaged boards, colour, grain, patina and the pattern of old nail holes and tool marks vary from piece to piece. We control overall tone, dimensions and finish to a consistent spec so a shipment reads as one coherent range, but each piece remains individual. We can supply reference photos for approval before production.

What is your minimum order for reclaimed wood ottomans?

A trial or sample order can ship LCL (part-container). For best wholesale pricing thereafter, one 20ft full container load is our standard minimum, and we consolidate reclaimed ottomans with reclaimed benches, coffee tables and décor into a single mixed container.

How do you finish and protect reclaimed wood ottomans?

We retain the salvaged character while making the piece practical: wood surfaces are sanded smooth enough to be splinter-free, then sealed with a matt or satin lacquer or hand-rubbed wax in CARB / TSCA Title VI formaldehyde-compliant formulations. Upholstered tops use your specified cover and fill. You can specify a natural weathered look, a light wash, or a richer stain. Reclaimed ottomans are intended for indoor and covered use.
