Compliance · Ethical & social audit · Export only

A SEDEX-registered, SMETA-audited furniture supplier your compliance team can sign off.

Before a single container ships, most serious importers, retail chains and hotel groups need to know the people who built your furniture were treated fairly and the factory is run safely. We are registered on SEDEX and audited to SMETA — so your ethical-sourcing approval is a formality, not a hold-up.

What this is

SEDEX and SMETA, explained plainly.

SEDEX — the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange — is the world's most widely used platform for sharing responsible-sourcing data. A supplier registers, completes a self-assessment, and links its profile to its buyers. SMETA — the Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit — is the on-site audit that verifies all of it. An independent auditor spends time on the factory floor, interviews workers in private, inspects the building and reviews payroll and hour records, then publishes a report and a corrective-action plan against the ETI Base Code and local law. For a buyer, a current SMETA report is objective, third-party proof that the factory behind the product meets recognised ethical standards.

The four pillars

What a SMETA audit actually checks — and where we stand.

A full SMETA is a four-pillar audit. Here is each pillar in buyer's terms, with how we run it.

1 · Labour standards

No forced, bonded or child labour; freedom of association; fair, documented wages paid on time; controlled, recorded working hours; no discrimination. The auditor confirms this through private worker interviews and payroll records — not paperwork alone.

2 · Health & safety

Machine guarding, fire exits and fire-fighting equipment, first aid, protective equipment, clean drinking water and sanitation. The physical factory is walked and checked against the code and local law.

3 · Environment

Responsible handling of waste, dust, finishes and effluent on site. This dovetails with our timber-legality and sustainability credentials — FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh verification and reclaimed-wood lines.

4 · Business ethics

Anti-bribery, transparent dealing and honest record-keeping. The same integrity that lets us hand your compliance team a clean, verifiable audit trail for every shipment.

Our standard

Audit-ready, documented, buyer-verifiable.

Ethical compliance is our lead trust wedge, not an afterthought. Many Jodhpur exporters still work on relationships alone and cannot produce a social audit when a Western buyer asks. We can — on SEDEX, where your compliance team already works, and reinforced by ISO quality management and SGS inspection. Audit reports and registration details go directly to serious buyers on request; we never publish numbers, to protect them from misuse.

What this means for your shipment

Faster onboarding, fewer approvals, lower risk.

Onboard us faster

Your ethical-sourcing team approves us from an existing SMETA report on SEDEX instead of commissioning a fresh audit — days, not weeks, before your first order can move.

Satisfy your ESG file

Retail chains, hospitality groups and listed importers carry their own due-diligence obligations. A current social audit is the evidence that lets you place the order and defend the supplier internally.

One complete file

SEDEX / SMETA covers the people and the factory; FSC, Vriksh, EUDR readiness, Lacey, UKTR, CARB / TSCA and ISPM-15 cover the product and the packing. Your broker gets the whole set.

Questions buyers ask

SEDEX & SMETA — frequently asked

What is SEDEX and SMETA?

SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) is a global membership platform where suppliers share ethical-trade data with their buyers. SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is the audit methodology used to verify that data on site. A SMETA audit checks a factory against the ETI Base Code and local law across labour standards, health and safety, the environment and business ethics, then publishes the report and corrective-action plan on SEDEX for linked buyers to review.

Is Jodhpur Handicraft a SEDEX member and SMETA-audited supplier?

Yes. We are registered on SEDEX and our manufacturing is covered by SMETA ethical audit, alongside ISO quality management and SGS third-party inspection. Our SEDEX registration details and the latest audit report are shared directly with serious buyers and their compliance teams on request — we do not publish reference numbers publicly, to prevent misuse.

What does a SMETA audit cover?

A full SMETA covers four pillars: labour standards (no forced or child labour, freedom of association, fair and documented wages, working hours), health and safety (machine guarding, fire safety, first aid, PPE), the environment, and business ethics. The auditor interviews workers, inspects the site and reviews records, then records any non-conformities with a time-bound corrective-action plan.

Why do US, UK and EU buyers ask for SEDEX?

Importers, retail chains and hospitality groups increasingly require a social-compliance audit before onboarding a new supplier, as part of their own ESG and due-diligence obligations. A current SMETA report on SEDEX lets your compliance team approve us from an existing, recognised dataset instead of commissioning a fresh audit — which shortens onboarding and de-risks the order.

How does SEDEX relate to your timber and market compliance?

They sit side by side. SEDEX / SMETA covers the ethical and social side — how people are treated and how the factory is run. Our timber and market compliance — FSC chain-of-custody, Vriksh timber-legality, EUDR readiness, Lacey Act and UKTR support, CARB / TSCA finishes and ISPM-15 packing — covers the product and the shipment. Together they give your customs broker and your buyer a complete, documented file.

Can you complete our own supplier code of conduct or ethical questionnaire?

Yes. Beyond SEDEX, we routinely complete buyers' own vendor codes of conduct, ethical-sourcing questionnaires and onboarding forms, and we can host a social or technical audit at our factory on prior intimation. Start with a quote request and tell us which standard your programme runs on.
